Statehood for Pondicherry?

The standing committee for the Union Home Ministry on Pondicherry headed by Sushma Swaraj has recommended granting statehood and special status to Pondicherry, which is currently a Union Territory. The committee’s report was tabled before Parliament on August 2nd. As a Union Territory, Pondicherry Chief Minister’s several administrative powers have been handicapped and they reside with the Lt Governor. The move towards statehood would eliminate such barriers. The committee also recommended sanctioning ‘B Two’ status for Pondicherry city as the urban population has exceeded 5 million in 2001. The committee also recommended recognition of Scheduled Tribes residing in Pondicherry.
