The courts step in…

The Madras High Court ruled today that All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) has the authority to inspect Deemed Universities. Almost a month back, I wrote on this blog about the problems faced by students in Deemed Universities. Finally the ruling of the Madras High Court should come as a welcome relief to these students. Many universities in Tamil Nadu have been trying to convert themselves to Deemed Universities because then they will no longer come under the strict purview of the AICTE. Therefore the quality of education in these Deemed Universities has steadily been degrading.

The implications of this ruling is that AICTE now has the right to inspect these universities and give a report to the University Grants Commission (UGC) which can choose to act upon the recommendations. This ruling today by the Madras High Court was in response to a petition filed by about 20 Deemed Universities in Tamil Nadu. Let’s hope that this ruling will result in improvements in the quality of education in Deemed Universities.
