Opposition parties in TN protest fuel hike

The Opposition parties unitedly protested the fuel hike by the Congress led central government. ADMK chief Jayalalitha, MDMDK chief Vaiko, and DPI leader Tirumavalavan shared a common platform for the first time. It must be recollected that they didn't not address a single joint rally when campaigning for the recently concluded Tamil Nadu assembly election. Leaders from other minor parties like MMK, and the break away faction of IUL, IUML, and INTUC also participated in the protests. The leaders were harsh on the Centre when criticising the fuel hike. Jayalalitha said that the "Centre was out of touch with the common man". Vaiko continued where he left of before the elections by attacking Karunanidhi. Tirumavalavan challenged the Left parties to withdraw support the government (one wonders why he didn't make the same suggestion to Vaiko ;-)). The meeting was well attended with cadres from ADMK, MDMK, and DPI taking part in the protests.

MK goes into damage control mode

Chief Minister Karunanidhi has decided to lower the sales tax on diesel. It was a smart move and timed correctly just before the fuel hike protest arranged by the opposition parties. He however was less critical of the Centre saying that they had no other option other than hiking the price due to the large losses faced by Government Oil Companies.
