Motorola facility in TN

The world's second largest cell phone manufacturer Motorola yesterday announced its plans of setting up a $100 million manufacturing facility in Sriperumbadur after a meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi. The company will establish a manufacturing plant in the 300-acre Sriperumbadur Hi-tech Special Economic Zone (SEZ) being developed jointly by Motorola and Government of Tamilnadu at Sriperumbudur. Motorola is purchasing 70 acres of land.

This comes close on the heels of a similar announcement by Nokia earlier this year. Cell phone market is booming in India, and Nokia is the undisputed leader. Analysts from Gartner are predicting that sales of handsets in India will quadruple to 117 million units by 2009. This announcement is yet another accomplishment for Dyanadhi Maran, who is responsible for bringing several developmental projects in the Telecommunication Industry to Tamil Nadu.
