Bills passed

Tamil now compulsory

The Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a bill today that would now make Tamil a compulsory subject in all schools in the first standard alone. While the government intended to make this compulsory from first to the tenth standard, it decided against it because of practical difficulties in implementing such a bill.

Reservation in private colleges

The Tamil Nadu Assembly today also unanimously passed a resolution that would allow 69 per cent reservation in private educational institutions in the state. This resolution also called upon the Central government to go ahead with its decision to reserve 27 per cent seats in government institutions funded by the Center.
