Water Problem!

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy ruled out releasing 395 tmc ft of water from Cauvery to Tamil Nadu as directed by the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal in its interim order. The decision to this effect was taken at an all party meeting in the state where leaders of ruling JD(S), BJP, and Congress participated. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Kumaraswamy said that the state was receiving step-motherly treatment by the Tribunal and Union Ministers at the Centre. The Karnataka Government will file its opinion before the Tribunal on June 15th.

The Cauvery water dispute has been a perennial problem between the states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The Central Government must find a better way of in enforcing the order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and should make the order binding to the two states. Otherwise, the orders of the Tribunal will serve no purpose.
