No more special honour for VIPs in temples

With a view to maintain equality among the devotees irrespective of their social status, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Thursday announced that the practice of according special honours to VIPs who visit temples would be done away with immediately.

‘‘This is done as a mark of respect for P T R Palanivel Rajan, who had held the HR & CE portfolio’’ Karunanidhi announced in the state Assembly.

Palanivel Rajan who died recently, made the recommendation when he was the chairman of the Estimates Committee of the State Assembly in 1972, Karunanidhi recalled.

Speaking on a resolution condoling the death of Palanivel Rajan in the House, the Chief Minister said despite the fact that Rajan was a staunch devotee of Goddess Meenakshi, he was very particular that equality prevailed among devotees in temples.

Karunanidhi said during his tenure as the Chief Minister three decades ago, he had implemented the recommendation of Palanivel Rajan in temples stopping special honours for VIPs like offering Parivattam (presenting sacred clothe offered to the presiding deity)…
