Tamil Nadu Elections

For a long time I was pondering about a suitable topic to blog on. A few days back it struck me that the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections would be an interesting topic to write about. For one, its the most difficult state to predict an outcome in the whole of India. For the past few elections, more than a few experienced analysts have got it wrong. Secondly, elections in Tamil Nadu is all about alliances. Politicians switch sides more often than they change clothes. And lastly, there are a more than a few interesting personalities to write on. All these led me to this topic which I promise to cover in an un-biased and objective manner. No compromise on that front! Stay tuned and enjoy…

    Elections Watch —-A Citizens Initiative
this is to spread awareness about upcoming the elections to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. It is common refrain that the words “free” & “fair” have consistently been missing from our politicians’ lexicon or even if they may be present, a mockery is made of them! How long??? its about time that changed!
This Election Watch is a PUCL initiative to strive towards just this change; disseminate information about candidates by circulating their affidavits (accessible to all with the promulgation of the Right to Information Act). Election Observers ought to be notified of irregularities between actual assets, liabilities, pending cases, dues payable to Govt. Departments, educational qualifications, etc and those shown in affidavits filed with their nominations, so the violators may be made to withdraw their nominations if necessary.

Candidates are required to file every 3 days the expenditure incurred by them during electioneering . Is this being done? Any citizen can access copies of the same online or from Returning Officers/Election Commission Office in Chennai. It is up to us citizens to ensure these procedures are being complied with.

As responsible citizens, we ought not just vote but ensure that those who we vote for are actually eligible to compete in the elections in the first place! PUCL invites all ye’ bloggers to volunteer to election-watch!!! Those in Chennai do attend our meeting at Gokhale Shastri Institute, Shanmuganandan Hall, Karpagambal Nagar, Luz, Mylapore, Chennai-4 every friday at 6pm.
